From the mouths of babes come words of wisdom. A baby can easily tell the truth which an adult would hold back or even lie for selfish purposes. The child is not poisoned by everyday problems, they are not at the mercy of stereotypes, so it is much easier for them to call a spade a spade. How easy is it to portray a child as the embodiment of purity and sincerity? Pavlukhina tried to create such an image.
The main characters of the painting are woman with a child in her arms, being apparently a mother and a son. The woman's head is covered with a sky-blue veil embroidered with gold. The boy is dressed in a green shirt and a white chiton symbolizing purity and frankness. She looks at her son with the eyes full of infinite love and affection. The boy, despite his young age, holds a scroll with a text in his hands. He appeals to his mother, tells about important things, and is not afraid of being unappreciated or rejected. Their eyes show an intrinsic relation forged between the baby and the mother guaranteeing trustful relationships. They hold out their hands to each other: the child searching support for his thoughts, and the mother hoping to protect her child from the world where injustice and deceit are commonplace. The whole picture is imbued with warm light and rays of acceptance.
Pavlukhina was inspired to create this picture watching children. Children are direct; they always speak their mind. They just do not know how to do it otherwise, they are not used to the fact that many adults lie not only to each other but also to themselves. To be happy, it is very important to try to keep "the mouths of babes" from which come words of wisdom. The artist painted the woman’s clothes blue, which allowed her to show the purity of woman’s thoughts that remained as such in adult life.
Pavlukhina managed to convey the moment of intimacy, when the child talks to his mother frankly and openly sharing his direct and naive thoughts, not distorted by misconceptions or benefit considerations, and therefore having a grain of truth. The mother's job is to raise a child who will never forget their inner self. It is as important as to encourage them to make decisions on their own from a young age.
