In this stage of life, Monet turned fifty; he bought property for the first time and negotiated the purchase of Edouard Manet’s “Olympia”.

These canvases were dominated by gigantic conical structures, composed of wheat or grain. As he often found, the changing light during the day presented him with many obstacles in his landscapes, he wrote: "I am,., struggling with a series of different effects [haystacks]... but at this season, the sun sets so fast I can not follow it...". Focusing on a single subject twenty-plus times gave Monet the ability to show the effects of changing light. It took his art from being focused on objects as subject, to being about light, or lumière, as subject.

17 work of this series based in different museums around the word, the rest are based in private collections. The Stage Hermitage Museum has canvas “The Haystack at Giverny” (1886).
